Andrew J. Weiland ’64 and Nancy Greer Weiland ’65 met at Colby. They are also the parents of Sarah Weiland Holland ’93. When they established their scholarship in 1999, the Weilands said, “The outstanding science program provided a superior background for our graduate programs. …a liberal arts education is extremely valuable to a scientist, who, in this era of rapidly advancing technology, must be able to provide literate explanations for research proposals in order to maintain grant funding.” They also appreciated that Sarah thrived in a small school atmosphere where she could play varsity lacrosse as well as obtain a great preparation for medical school.A biology major, Dr. Andrew obtained his M.D. from Bowman Gray Sch Med in 1968. He practices at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which is the premier hospital for orthopedics and rheumatology in the U.S. and abroad.
