The O’Hanian-Szostak Fellowship for Civic Leadership offers Colby students an opportunity for community leadership and professional development. Fellowships are competitively awarded to highly motivated students who are dedicated to public service and have an expressed interest in making an impact on the Colby and greater Waterville communities. Fellows are tasked with building student participation in civic engagement by developing community-based projects that align with the students academic interests, focus on meeting community needs and build meaningful relationships with local stakeholders and community members.

Fellows work under the guidance of the Office of Civic Engagement and Community Partnerships to design and implement high impact initiatives that foster a campus culture of critical inquiry and active citizenship. Civic Engagement staff facilitate community partner connections and support Fellows through all phases of their project.

Commitment:

• Design and implement a semester- or year-long project in the category of the student’s academic and public interest (e.g. youth development, food insecurity, public health, environmentalism) in partnership with a community organization.
• Work collaboratively with the Office of Civic Engagement and Community Partnerships
• Identify a faculty adviser to help support and guide the project
• Attend monthly meetings with the cohort of Fellows and the Director of Civic Engagement for resource sharing, peer learning and mentorship
• Engage with the Omprakash Edge online learning platform and complete blog posts
• Provide project documentation, assessment and summary for the Office of Civic Engagement and the O’Hanian-Szostak family

Students receive annual stipends of $2,000 per fellow. Additionally, students can apply for project grants up to $2,000 to implement their civic projects, including professional development, funding to attend workshops, conferences, or other opportunities.
